What is Prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy, also known as "Reconstructive Therapy" is an injection technique that causes repair of damaged and/or painful joints. Prolotherapy comes from the word "proliferate" which means "to cause to grow or increase rapidly". It causes the growth of cells and tissue in the specific area needing repair which strengthens weakened joints, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons.

How does Prolotherapy work?

Your ligaments function as the primary support to your joints. A joint is kind of like a brick wall. Bricks are very strong in there own right, just like the bones of your body are. If you were making a wall but you did not use any mortar to keep the bricks together it would be very easy to topple the wall. A brick wall gets a lot of its strength not just from the bricks but also from the mortar that holds the wall together. In your body, the "mortar" that holds your joints together and gives them strength is the ligaments. The ligaments connect your bones to each other. Tendons connect muscle to bone and cause the movement of a joint. When a joint is injured, either all at once in one bad injury, or by wear and tear over the months or years, the ligaments and tendons become torn and are unable to provide stability to the involved joint. This can cause the cartilage to become worn down also. The result of this process is joint instability resulting in periodic or constant pain, less movement and lack of endurance. By repairing the ligaments, tendons and cartilage with Prolotherapy, the joint is returned to normal strength and stability and the joint is pain free.

What does Prolotherapy do?

Prolotherapy stimulates your body's tissues' healing mechanism. It promotes the body's natural healing ability. Each treatment session results in more and more tissue being laid down in the needed areas. As a result the joints continue to become stronger and more stabilized. In this manner the joint is returned to its natural strength and motion. Pain becomes less and less and in almost all cases disappears entirely. Prolotherapy can be administered wherever ligaments, tendons and cartilage are torn or worn.

Key Benefits

  • The natural function of the body is regained and optimized.
  • No surgery or medication is used.
  • Relieves or totally removes pain from infected area.
  • Strengthens joint
  • In a double blind human study where neither the patients nor the researchers knew specifically who was receiving the treatment, 88.5% of those injected with the reconstructive solution showed improvement.
  • Reconstructive therapy is capable of increasing the strength and structure of ligaments and tendons to 130%- 140% of normal.
  • Results are permanent.
  • Treatment is delivered on an out patient basis – no lengthy convalescence or rehab.
  • No significant side effects.
  • Very conservative treatment; does not remove parts like surgery.
  • Helps many conditions: neck pain, mid back pain, low back pain, elbow pain, shoulder pain, rotator cuff injuries, knee pain, ankle pain, foot pain, TMJ pain, and hand pain to name a few
